Abstract
Modern youth sport is undergoing a paradigm shift from a performance-centric model toward a holistic development framework. The AWARD Erasmus+ project addresses this evolution by integrating digital learning technologies with long-term sustainability strategies. This article explores how digital tools facilitate coach development and how these advancements are transformed into a lasting social legacy.
I. Digital Learning as a Catalyst for Pedagogical Change
Traditional coach education often relies on retrospective perceptions and static content, which frequently fail to account for the complex, interconnected modes of learning that coaches actually experience (Stodter & Cushion, 2017). To address this, digital learning environments must transition from simple repositories to interactive ecosystems that foster complex thinking (Alvarez-Icaza et al., 2024).
A cornerstone of this transition is the implementation of Adaptive Learning. Within this framework, AI-driven recommendations allow for the individualization of training protocols. This process mirrors a broader trend in sports science where data is used to enhance psychological safety and athlete-centered environments (Côté et al., 2022). Unlike linear curricula, adaptive systems utilize algorithms to analyze user engagement and knowledge gaps. This allows for "just-in-time" support, providing coaches with micro-learning interventions tailored to real-world scenarios. By monitoring "non-performance" indicators such as athlete motivation and perceived stress, AI can recommend interventions that prioritize mental well-being. This objective layer of data helps coaches mitigate unconscious bias, fostering an environment where athletes feel equitably supported (Côté et al., 2022). The creation of specialized tutor guides ensures that pedagogical scaffolding remains in place. Research indicates that digital mentoring is most effective when it provides structured pathways rather than unstructured data (Koh et al., 2023).
II. Building Impact Through Knowledge Transfer and Legacy
The ultimate success of sport-for-development initiatives is defined by their "social sustainability", the ability of the project's benefits to persist and evolve within the community after the initial implementation phase (Hausken-Sutter et al., 2023). A project only achieves true impact when its outcomes are embedded into the social and institutional fabric of the participating regions.
The framework for legacy is built upon three strategic pillars:
Technical sustainability is prioritized through a commitment to maintain digital infrastructure for a minimum of five years. This prevents "digital decay" and ensures continuous access for grassroots organizations (Jones et al., 2022).
Creating a framework where athletes transition into mentoring roles facilitates the transfer of "tacit knowledge." This knowledge transfer is essential for maintaining high-quality standards within sporting organizations (Poucher et al., 2021).
By aligning project outcomes with national vocational training (VET) structures, the methodology is recognized as a formal standard, thereby influencing the broader culture of youth sport and ensuring long-term continuity.
Conclusion
The synergy between digital innovation and legacy planning allows for a movement beyond temporary intervention. By utilizing AI to serve "high-touch" human connections and securing the technical and social continuity of these resources, the partnership establishes a durable model for athlete development that reshapes the future of youth sports.
